Water funding for Landholders

The SA Arid Lands has funds available to assist landholders with on-ground protection work for springs, waterholes and natural waterbodies. Benifits include improved stock management and productive capacity and protection of important wildlife habitat. To be eligible, your property must be in the Northern Flinders Ranges or Gawler Ranges area.

Groundwater, Resources Waterholes and Dependent Ecosystems in the Flinders Ranges

This project aims to increase the understanding of groundwater resources in the northern Flinders Ranges through data collection and analysis. This will provide the community with greater capacity to manage naturally occurring water resources. The information collected will be used to prioritise on-ground works and provide a more integrated approach to sustainable use and management of water resources. It builds on project work carried out by landholders in the region who acted as ‘champions’ during 2004/05 to undertake early on ground work (eg fencing) to protect wet areas and ecosystems. Comparative valuation and management of Great Artesian bore drain wetlands in South Australia.

Great Artesian Basin (GAB) water has created wetlands of value to the community.   Now that the use of alternative stock water delivery systems are being encouraged in the region, some bore drains will be closed. This project will develop a process that compares the social, environmental and economic benefits that bore drains provide to various communities, to decide which ones should remain in operation and which should be decommissioned.

Groundwater, Resources Waterholes and Dependent Ecosystems in the Gawler Ranges

Very little is known about surface and groundwater resources in the Gawler Ranges.  This project will develop a database containing field data and information sourced from the local community about the region. This information will support better management of the region’s natural resources.

Allocating Water and Maintaining Springs in the Great Artesian Basin

The Great Artesian Basin (GAB) is the largest groundwater basin in the world, covering 22% of the Australian continent. Water from the GAB’s underground aquifers supports pastoral, mining and tourism industries as well as outback towns and associated businesses. The need for intervention to control the extraction of water from the GAB was recognised as early as 1913 and since that time Governments have worked with landholders to control waste of GAB water and reverse the reduction in aquifer pressure. This project will provide further scientific information to enhance decision-making in relation to sustainable water allocation processes and its impacts on the Western region of the GAB. This project is funded through the Federal (Australian Government’s National Water Initiative Program) and the South Australian State Governments. It will be administered through the South Australian Arid Lands NRM Board in collaboration with Department of Water Land and Biodiversity Conservation and Department of Environment and Heritage in South Australia and the Department of Natural Resources, Environment and the Arts in the Northern Territory.
