Regional NRM Board members have strategic, planning and implementation responsibilities for the region.
Board members meet approximately every 6 – 8 weeks to discuss a range of issues at different locations within the Arid Lands region. Board meeting agendas and minutes are available.

Major roles and responsibilities include:
- developing regional NRM strategy and policy
- establishing NRM groups and determining group membership in consultation with the Minister
- appointing and assigning staff subject to Ministerial approval
- establishing advisory committees at the board’s direction subject to regulation
- appointing regional authorised officers as appropriate
- developing, implementing and reviewing a regional NRM plan and monitoring outputs and outcomes (either directly or through NRM groups)
- preparing, reviewing and amending Water Allocation Plans as appropriate for prescribed water resources and recommending to the Minister water-based levy structure for prescribed water resources
- recommending the basis for land-based levies
- managing and applying the regional NRM fund
- enhancing community capacity in NRM
