The NRM Council has a central role in advising the Minister on the overall implementation and ongoing review of the NRM Act. It needs to keep abreast of State level issues and significant issues that apply across NRM regions.
The roles and responsibilities of the NRM Council include:
- Advising the Minister on a range of issues relating to the effective implementation of the NRM Act and of the NRM reform program in general
- Monitoring the effectiveness of the NRM Act and proposing amendments as considered appropriate;
- Establishing committees as required by Regulation or as considered necessary;
- Policy development and leadership, including policy input to the Planning Strategy under the Development Act;
- Preparation and maintenance of the State NRM Plan;
- Advising the Minister on NRM research initiatives
- Auditing, monitoring and evaluating the state and condition of the State’s natural resources;
- Assisting with any levy issue that requires resolution and advising the Minister re the management of the State NRM Fund;
- Assisting in major NRM initiatives that cross regional boundaries;
- Convening State-wide forums, promoting community awareness etc;
- Providing advice to the Minister on membership of regional NRM boards
